The Latest Innovation from Susanne Kaufmann
Tested by our Editor
Retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C - we all know and love them. But when a new ingredient comes onto the scene and stirs up a serious buzz (yes, this newcomer is rumored to dethrone hyaluronic acid!), my skincare enthusiast radar immediately goes off. Enter: The Ectoin Repair Serum by Susanne Kaufmann. Ectoin has been gaining attention this year, hailed by ELLE as the "new anti-aging hero" and by Harper's Bazaar as "skincare’s safeguarding ingredient." It’s also appearing in scientific studies and is poised to join the ranks of those big-name ingredients we already trust.
It's worth mentioning that Susanne Kaufmann has actually been using ectoin in her product line for over 10 years - though until now, the ingredient mostly played a supporting role. But with her latest serum, the Austrian skincare pioneer is giving ectoin the spotlight it deserves. My curiosity was piqued not only because I’ve met Susanne several times and fully trust her expertise, but also because ectoin has a reputation for tackling multiple skin concerns at once. For the past four weeks, I’ve diligently incorporated this serum into both my morning and evening routines. Here’s what happened.

The Science Behind Ectoin
Before diving into the results (patience, please!), let’s take a moment to talk about this wonder ingredient. What exactly is ectoin, and what does it do for your skin? Ectoin is a powerful natural molecule derived from microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments. As a natural amino acid derivative, it helps protect these microorganisms and plants from harsh conditions like salt lakes, hot springs, arctic ice, deep seas, or deserts. And how does it do this? Simply put, it forms a protective layer around the cells by binding water molecules from its environment. Just as it works in nature, ectoin provides proven protection in skincare, shielding the skin from dehydration and harmful environmental aggressors (think pollution). And who wouldn’t dream of a protective, nourishing, and stabilizing moisture cloak around their cells? Exactly.
Here are the main benefits of ectoin:
Anti-Aging
Ectoin stabilizes cell membranes and shields them from UV radiation and air pollutants. With its antioxidant properties, it protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. In skincare, ectoin acts as an effective anti-aging ingredient, preventing early signs of aging and keeping your cells healthy and vibrant for the long term.
Moisture Booster
Ectoin binds water molecules and strengthens the skin barrier, much like hyaluronic acid. It enhances the skin’s moisture content and reduces water loss, making your skin more supple and radiant. Fine lines caused by dryness are minimized, and your skin appears plumper. Fun fact: An independent study found that after 8 days of using ectoin, skin hydration increased by up to 200% compared to placebo-treated skin. This elevated moisture level was maintained for about 7 days even after stopping the application.
Anti-Inflammatory
Ectoin has anti-inflammatory properties that help with acne, sensitive skin, as well as conditions like rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. It soothes the skin, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the skin barrier, making it harder for pathogens and bacteria to penetrate. This results in a healthy, calm, and clear complexion—making it ideal for stressed and reactive skin.

"Ectoin is one of my favourite ingredients, one that I have used for a long time (15 years ago in the men's range, and still in our Enzyme Exfoliator and the Rejuvenating line), and so I wanted to incorporate this into a dedicated powerful serum, combined with Q10 for both repair and protection."

The Testing
Apart from the fact that I naturally love to test any scientifically proven ingredient, I’m particularly excited about the Ectoin Repair Serum. Given that I’m definitely not 21 anymore, my first question was whether it can it help reduce my fine lines. And then: Can it ensure that my skin is better protected on those days when I’m heading at the Niche Beauty offices in Hamburg? Is it really so hydrating that it can compete with hyaluronic acid?
In the mornings, I apply the serum as a step between my cleanser and SPF - especially on the days when I head into the city, I feel particularly well-equipped and comfortable with the serum on my skin. (Note: I now live in a very rural area.)
The texture wins me over with a subtle, refreshing scent that is luxurious without being overpowering. Besides ectoin, the serum naturally contains more carefully selected, clean ingredients: Q10, blackcurrant bud extract, hollyhock extract, purple algae extract, all known for their ability to soothe irritations and reduce redness, as well as a blend of alpine herb extracts that nourish the skin and support its natural regeneration process. In the evenings, after cleansing my face, I apply the serum again, followed by a richer night cream to lock in the benefits overnight.

The Results
After four weeks of consistent use (and the 30-milliliter bottle is far from empty), I’ve observed the following:
Hydration: My skin feels more hydrated and plump. The serum’s moisturizing properties are undeniable, and I’ve noticed that my skin retains moisture better throughout the day. My fine lines from dryness are no longer visible by the end of the day when wearing makeup.
Anti-Aging: Fine lines and wrinkles appear diminished. While no product can fully turn back the clock, the Ectoin Repair Serum has certainly helped smooth out some of these signs of aging.
Pollution Protection Shield: On days when I’m exposed to more environmental pollution, my skin doesn’t feel as grimy or congested. I would describe it as a certain clarity that I gratefully attribute to the protective properties of Ectoin.
Skin Barrier aka Microbiome: My skin feels stronger and more resilient. Small irritations and redness, which occasionally appear, have noticeably decreased.
My Conclusion
In a market where there’s such a vast array of products and formulations to choose from - and it can certainly take a while to identify the top performers - I can confidently say that Susanne Kaufmann’s Ectoin Repair Serum clearly stands out. Some other products in my top shelf lineup definitely have some serious competition now. If you’re looking for a hybrid product that repairs and protects stressed skin, strengthening the skin's natural protective barrier, then this new release is just right for you. Reminder: In the end, skincare is about finding what works for you. For me, this serum is a winner that rightfully takes center stage.
